First World Fights

It amazes me the time and effort that some people spend fighting something that in other parts of the world would be laughed at. Or in most cases, they wish that they had that problem. Recently, a high school in a nice area of Long Island New York opted to go with a gender neutral cap and gown for their high school graduation ceremony and the response was anything but harmonious...
Kids decided to stage a walkout, parents had "emergency" PTA board meetings and everyone took to social media like a Kardashian to a rapper.
It was pathetic....
All that this world is facing at this moment and this is the fight that you choose? There are children in our own community who are faced with being homeless, going to bed hungry every night and the real fear of worrying what the future brings. We have a drug epidemic the likes of we have never seen that is sweeping the country and leaving certain areas devastated in its path. We have an income gap that continues to grow at such an alarming rate that pretty soon celebrities wont even be able to afford the prostitutes and drugs that they have become accustomed to.
There are certain areas of the United States that right at this moment are practically a police state. Cops patrolling streets so dangerous that there are curfews. There are locations in Baltimore, New Jersey, Chicago, Detroit, etc... that look like third world war torn countries. That are countless teenagers in this country who will never even have the opportunity to wear that cap and gown because the so called "American Dream" isn't truly meant for them.
Yet, you choose to fight over the fact that your daughter has to wear the same color gown as some dude? In the grand scheme of things do you realize how miniscule and ridiculous this is? There are eight year olds working in the diamond minds of Sierra Leone who will not live to see their teenage years but this is the fight that you chose?
In the fall these kids will head out to their colleges, universities and workplaces. I hope that upon getting settled in to their new environment that can look past the foolishness of their privileged elitist life and take up a cause that is truly worth fighting for. Because a year from now no one is giving a f@#k what color you wore when you accepted your diploma.
