Wasted money!!!

When will we wake up and start to get our priorities straight? Every year for the past half of a century we have wasted billions, yes billions, on space exploration and research while every night young children will go to sleep hungry all across the greatest country in the world. How can we possibly cheer the takeoff of these shuttles as they are wasting millions of dollars in fuel alone and there are a countless number of children in our own backyards, regardless of what town you live in, whose only real meal that they get all day is the free lunch at school. Besides, we cannot even sustain the balance of our own planet or provide for all of its inhabitants yet we are wasting time, research and money in an attempt to find an ounce of water or a plant on Mars. Really?? Do you think some kid with taped up shoes, ill fitting clothes and an empty stomach gives two s***s if there is vegetation on Mars? He would be happy if there was vegetation in his fridge, screw Mars.
We haven't even explored all of this planet yet. There are miles and miles of ocean floor that is safer and cheaper to get to and which might hold sustainable food sources, the cures for numerous diseases, etc... The same could be said for the thousands of acres of jungle that have never been explored. Now I am not saying we should go there with chain saws and just start hacking but I now that it would be a lot cheaper to explore and I have a feeling we have a better chance of finding something new there than on Mars.
And this waste goes beyond exploration, how about all the money we spend overseas somewhere whenever there is a catastrophe. Now, before everyone calls me cruel, did any one send the United States money when Hurricane Katrina decided to wipe out New Orleans? I know that we are a world power but every time there is a Tornado, Tsunami or Earthquake everyone looks to us to cover the bill. I am not saying that these things aren't sad but what about the thousands of Americans without a job right now? Would not that money be better spent on feeding the hungry? housing the homeless? educating the uneducated?
People are starting to lose hope, starting to lose faith and are just plain giving up when they see that their government cares more about those on an uninhabitable plant or half a globe away than they do about their own people. Can you blame them?
Is it hot in here or am I Crazy?

  1. I totally agree. It's really depressing how often this happens

  2. This is where I totally disagree with you. Space exploration is less than 1% of where our governments money actually goes. In the grand scheme of life, space exploration is one of the only facets that promotes innovation and the expansion of human technology. It also re establishes the point of why exactly we are here. These are only SOME of the technologies that NASA has given us:

    Invisible Braces
    Scratch-resistant Lenses
    Memory Foam
    Ear Thermometer
    Shoe Insoles
    Long-distance Telecommunications
    Adjustable Smoke Detector
    Safety Grooving (on airport runways)
    Water Filters
    TV Satellite Dish
Vision Screening System (can be used with young children who don't speak)
    Fire Fighter Equipment
    Aerodynamic Bicycle Wheel
    Thermal Gloves and Boots
    Shock Absorbing Helmets
    Ski Boots
    Joystick Controllers

NASA represents the desire of the human spirit to learn, explore, discover and share knowledge. What a great pity we can't as a species get our act together and put more money into space exploration. So if you want to talk about cutting budgets start with the military and one of the many nonsensical wars we are fighting or some of the tax loopholes for the mega wealthy. If you want to learn more about this very topic I am currently reading the book space chronicles by neil degrasse tyson it is very enlightening.
